| The United Religions Initiative (URI) is a growing global community dedicated to interfaith peace building both locally and internationally. The URI's purpose is to promote enduring, daily interfaith cooperation, end religiously-motivated violence and create cultures of peace, justice and healing for the Earth and all living beings.
The URI began clarifying its vision in 1996 and is now in the process of finishing its organizational bylaws. The Chaordic Alliance assisted the URI in determining a common purpose, shared values and an organizational design that is inclusive and non-hierarchical and which enhances cooperation, autonomy and individual opportunity. The URI invites participants of any religion, spiritual expression or indigenous tradition to work together through "Cooperation Circles" to foster mutual understanding and respect.
The URI launched its new decentralized organization at its June 2000 Global Summit. The URI plans to serve as a moral voice and a source of action in areas such as:
- Sharing the wisdom and cultures of faith traditions;
- Nurturing cultures of healing and peace;
- Supporting actions that uphold human rights and ecological welfare;
- Bringing spiritual perspectives to global economic issues.
By designing the URI using a chaordic development process, the URI has been able to co-create its organization with thousands of participants from around the globe, giving each a sense of participation in and responsibility for the success of this initiative. The URI is an example of how chaordic organization can quickly propel a local grass roots initiative into an active, prominent and effective international organization.
